Rules to follow during your visit

There are of course many rules to ensure that the community can live independently (no cars, no violence…).

📷 The one that interests us as visitors is not to take photographs in Pusher Street in particular, to protect the privacy of the residents and preserve the tranquility of the area. It’s especially advisable to avoid photographing the outskirts of Pusher Street, which used to be the street of cannabis dealers. Especially as it’s not the friendliest part of the neighborhood. This rule could just as easily apply to all Copehnague’s neighborhoods.

Our review of Christiania

It’s a real little haven of peace in the middle of the city, far from the hustle and bustle of the Indre By district. We loved the green and peaceful feel of this place, a real haven in the heart of the city and a must-see. It’s at the top of our list of things to see and do in Copenhagen.

However, we were a little less seduced by the area around the famous Pusher Street. Fortunately, since 2024, the situation has changed: the drug dealers have had to leave the area, which has undoubtedly allowed the neighborhood to regain its authentic charm and tranquility. This further reinforces Christiania’s unique and welcoming character, true to its spirit of freedom and creativity.

We explored the neighborhood on a bike tour, which is a great way to discover the nooks and crannies of Christiania.

History of Christiania: A unique enclave in Copenhagen

The story of Christiania began in 1971, when activists and artists took over a disused military base. Their goal? To create an alternative society based on the principles of freedom, self-management and sharing. The movement quickly gained momentum, and the “Free City of Christiania” was founded. Despite tensions with the Danish authorities, the community organizes itself and establishes its own rules of life.

The inhabitants of Christiania advocate a simpler, more environmentally-friendly way of life. Today, Christiania is a unique enclave, still on the bangs of the rest of Copenhagen, offering a space for creativity and freedom of expression.

This singular history gives Christiania an undeniable charm, very different from the rest of the Indre By district or the more classic places far different from the elegance of Amalienborg Palace or Christianborg Castle. Here, we find ourselves immersed in a bohemian/hippie atmosphere, with an alternative lifestyle still very much alive.
