History and architecture of Frederiksborg Castle

The Royal Origins of the castle

Frederiksborg Castle was founded in the early 17th century by King Christian IV. Built between 1560 and 1630, the castle reflects the grandeur of the Renaissance period, when Denmark was booming politically, economically and culturally. It soon became the principal residence of the royal family.

👑 Frederiksborg was also the venue for important ceremonies, such as the coronations of Danish kings.

A Danish Renaissance Masterpiece

The castle is a true gem of Renaissance architecture. It is inspired by French Renaissance castles, but with a uniquely Nordic touch. The richly decorated red-brick facades, finely sculpted sandstone details, slender towers and jagged gables all illustrate the splendor of this period.

The main entrance, located on a man-made island, is particularly striking, with its imposing portal adorned with statues and symbolic motifs.

Reconstruction after the fire of 1859

🔥 A devastating fire destroyed much of the castle in 1859, leaving only the outer walls and a few interior parts. Restoration was completed in 1882, and the castle was transformed into the National History Museum, which today showcases over 500 years of Danish history.

Not-to-be-missed venues

State Rooms: A Plunge into Royal Life

The castle’s state rooms, located in the main part of the building, are sumptuously decorated and reflect the splendor of the Danish royal court.

🌟 Among the most remarkable rooms:

  • The Knights’ Hall is distinguished by its majestic proportions. Here, the ceilings are adorned with frescoes and gilded stucco, while the walls are decorated with portraits of kings and queens.
  • The Audience Chamber, with its period furniture and tapestries, gives a precise idea of the opulence that characterized the royal residences.

The Castle Chapel: An example of Baroque art

The Castle Chapel is a true masterpiece of Baroque art. Built in 1617, it is one of the few spaces to have survived the fire of 1859 almost intact. Its sumptuous interior features gilded vaults, walls decorated with relief motifs and colorful stained-glass windows. The richly carved stalls and imposing altar are magnificent examples of the religious art of the period.

It was in this chapel that the kings and queens of Denmark were crowned, a ritual imbued with symbolism and solemnity.

Frederiksborg Castle Gardens and Park

Baroque Gardens

The Baroque gardens of Frederiksborg Castle are a masterpiece of 17th-century garden design. Created during the reign of Frederick IV, the gardens are designed according to the strict principles of symmetry and perspective characteristic of the Baroque style.

🌿 Carefully designed flowerbeds, precisely trimmed hedges and fountains add a touch of freshness and dynamism. In the center of the garden, a series of terraces slope gently down to the lake, offering panoramic views of the castle.

The Landscape Park

In addition to the Baroque gardens, the castle is surrounded by a vast landscaped park extending over several hectares. In contrast to the strict order of the gardens, the park offers a more natural landscape of vast lawns, woods and bodies of water. Lake Frederiksborg, which encircles the castle, is the park’s central feature.

This park is an ideal place to relax and enjoy nature. It’s also a perfect place for a bike ride or a walk. We recommend this 1h15 loop around the lake in the castle gardens, itinerary on the Alltrails website.

If you love beautiful parks, we recommend a visit to the Tivoli Gardens and Botanical Gardens during your vacation in Copenhagen.
