A little history

Today’s Christiansborg Palace is the third to be built on this site, with major rebuilds following fires in 1794 and 1884. Located in the Indre By district, it is part of Copenhagen’s rich historical heritage.

Several parts of this palace are still occupied by the Danish monarchy. It was the principal residence of the Danish kings until 1794, when they moved to Amalienborg Palace.

Current functions

Today, the palace occupies an important place in Danish political life:

  • Parliament: The palace houses the Folketing, the Danish parliament, where the country’s laws are debated and passed.
  • Prime Minister’s Office: This also houses the offices of the Danish Prime Minister.
  • Supreme Court: Denmark’s Supreme Court is housed in this palace, making Christiansborg an important judicial center.

Parties open to the public

  1. The Royal Reception Rooms: Used for official events and state ceremonies, these sumptuous rooms are decorated with tapestries from the Gobelins manufactory.
  2. The Ruins: beneath the palace, visitors can explore the ruins of the former medieval palaces to better understand the various extensions and destructions of the castle. We recommend you watch the short film presented in one of the ruin rooms, which is highly instructive on the history of the castle.
  3. The Palace Chapel: used for religious services and royal weddings.
  4. The Royal Stables: home to the horses and carriages used for royal events.
  5. La Cuisine Royale: An exhibition on royal banquets and period cuisine.

It’s a great idea for a visit, especially if you’re visiting Copenhagen in winter, as it allows you to discover history indoors.

The must-see view from Copenhagen

Christiansborg Tower: Copenhagen’s tallest tower, offering panoramic views of the city, including landmarks such as the Rundetårn Tower, the Nyhavn Canal or, in the distance, the entrance to Tivoli Gardens.

In our opinion, this is the visit not to be missed during your stay in Copenhagen. An elevator + a flight of stairs take you to the top, and it’s free. Explanatory panels help you find your way to the top.

🧒 It’s a family-friendly activity in Copenhagen, and our daughter got 2 postcards as a gift. In Denmark, children are always made to feel welcome.
