History of Kronborg: From the origins to the present day

A strategic and royal construction

Built in 1420 by King Eric of Pomerania and remodeled in 1574 by King Frederick II, Kronborg was more than just a castle; it was an essential military stronghold for Denmark. It served to guard and control the Øresund Strait, a vital maritime passage linking the Baltic Sea to the North Sea. By imposing a toll on ships crossing these waters, Denmark consolidated its economic power.

The castle was enlarged and strengthened over the years, becoming one of the most powerful fortresses of its time. However, a fire in 1629 destroyed much of Kronborg. Fortunately, King Christian IV ordered its reconstruction, and the castle was restored to its former splendor, with Renaissance and Baroque touches.

Centuries of transformation

Over the following centuries, Kronborg lost its military function and became a royal residence, then a barracks for the Danish army until the 20th century. Thanks to numerous restorations, it has now been restored to its former glory, and is now a museum open to the public, retracing the fascinating history of the region and its sovereigns.

Kronborg and Hamlet: An unbreakable bond

🎭 Why did Kronborg Castle inspire Shakespeare’s famous play “Hamlet“? The answer is not entirely clear, but what is certain is that the castle’s imposing atmosphere and strategic location made it a perfect choice to illustrate the drama and royal intrigue.

A living theater

Every summer, Kronborg hosts open-air performances of “Hamlet”, transforming its courtyards and ramparts into a theatrical stage. These performances attract not only Shakespeare fans, but also the curious who come to discover the castle in a new light, immersed in the dramatic and captivating atmosphere of the play, “Hamlet”, to be read or read again here.
